is San Francisco's interactive art center where young people can explore and produce visual, performing and media arts using technology as a creative tool.

Mission
Zeum's mission is to foster the creativity of young people of all backgrounds by:

  • Providing a hands-on, participatory environment for youth arts expression
  • Creating opportunities for collaboration among young people, artists, educators and partner organizations
  • Integrating the arts into the classroom curriculum.

History
Zeum is the cornerstone of the Rooftop at Yerba Buena Gardens, an innovative project of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency to develop an entire city block as an urban destination for youth. More than a decade in the planning, Zeum was founded as a not-for-profit organization in 1992, began its signature brand of community programming in 1995, broke ground on its permanent facility in 1996 and opened to the public on October 31, 1998.

Internship
I worked with Marie Sayles in Zeum’s Education Department in a variety of areas: assessment, professional development and expanding the ways in which teachers prepare for and use their Zeum experiences in their classrooms. My additional personal goals included exploring the learning that takes place in a public setting, grant writing, technology in public schools, and other employment opportunities in educational technology.

Projects

  • Wrote and compiled a new information packet and curriculum guide for teachers visiting Zeum
  • Taught a class to a group of TechNet teachers for the San Francisco Education Fund in conjunction with Zeum
  • Completed and tested a survey for teachers and students about their field trip experience
  • Assisted in a workshop that is part of an ongoing professional development grant for art teachers in San Francisco
  • Revised documents for publication
  • Proposed redesign of the Zeum website to better showcase student work and to help teachers understand the field trip experience
  • Proposed changes for the structure of the lab space and for fieldtrip classes.
