Reflection This project took shape during weekly visits to my grandmother, Elisabeth Bryan, until she died this April. Starting last May, she began a long journey from a retirement community in Tennessee to my parent's home, then to an assisted living facility in the Bay Area, to a hospital, to two different rehabilitation centers, and finally to a convalescent hospital. Much of my personal motivation for Digital Voices stems from observing communication in these various health care settings, struggling to understand what was happening to my grandmother and looking for help and support both for her and for my family. As in many other ways, I am deeply grateful for my grandmother's grace and influence on this project. She was a remarkable woman who I love a great deal. Several of my former students who face chronic illnesses also influenced my work and provided some of the early inspiration. Thank you all. |
