Music Informatics Curriculum - ED 190

The Project ...

During the 2007-2008 academic year, Professor Jonathan Middleton was visiting Stanford at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) to collaborate with other members of the department on his research and to develop a proposal for a similar program in Music Informatics at his home university, Eastern Washington University. In January, he visited the LDT seminar class to talk about this program and to ask if any students were interested in helping to write the curriculum and proposal in Music Informatics.

The Solution ...

As an undergraduate, I studied computer music and composition at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In order to start developing a curriculum for EWU, I first consulted with my former professors and about a dozen other students who were somehow involved with the department - the objective of which was to understand the types of classes that are most necessary to such a program and what types of courses are most desireable for students.

After gathering and analyzing the feedback from this process, I worked with Professor Middleton to finalize a degree plan taking into consideration the resources that are available at EWU. Then, finally, I put together all of the information that we had collected and thought through into a proposal that would be presented to EWU administration in June 2008.
