Making Thinking Visible is an integrated instruction plan consisting of two components: a hierarchical matrix of media analysis activities and a software application for video analysis. The solution is designed for use in the classroom or computer lab, and can be scaled from one computer as a demonstration to full-class activities.

activity matrix

The activity matrix is designed to facilitate teaching media analysis skills using content of the teacher’s choice. mTv activities are designed to lead to specific Bloom’s learning outcomes. They are organized by level, allowing teachers to choose activities that are most appropriate for their learning goals.

activity examples

Teachers can customize activities to meet their students’ levels and content objectives. One activity, “Infer the rationale for the existence of element x,” can be adapted in countless ways. In 5th grade, students compare the choice of persuasive techniques in two campaign commercials. In 6th grade, students analyze narrative elements such as effect of character traits on the plot of a cartoon. In 7th grade students analyze the impact of graphical features in a news broadcast.
