Master's Project Proposal: Outbreak

A pandemic is coming. Be ready.

Premise:
What would happen if the avian flu hit America next year? How can we prepare the nation and those most vulnerable to the disease? Play a game that seats the player in the middle of a pandemic as it circles the world. See how decisions made at the international, national and local level impact the lives of billions of people across the globe.

Features:
  • Make tactical decisions on vaccination production and distrubtion

  • Understand the "wild-fire" nature of pandemics and how they spread

  • Toy with simulators to see the effect of local policy

  • Survive for 18 months while maximizing food, water, health facilities and vaccines.

Audience:
Teenagers and Young Adults - The young and the healthy are the most vulnerable to this kind of virus. Ironically, they are probably the least likely to prepare and may have the least gut-level understanding of how fast a virus can spread.

Learning priniciples:
  • Experiential learning

  • Problem based learning

  • Motivation

  • Multiple Intelligences

  • Cognitive Constructivism - learning by doing

Learning technologies:
  • Simulation

  • Gaming
