Eyespot and Second Life what I learned about people, technology, content and more
Today I visited EyeSpot and Second Life to begin researching my final paper Teaching Participatory Game Design Using Second Life (working title). Again I'm amazed by the breadth of content in Second Life. I did a find to search for gaming events. I pulled up over 20 events. One event was for a company called Divivity. It struck me that a great way to teach game design would be to encourage students to create advergames for real SL businesses. Using Fraps, Audacity, and eyespot, I captured a fly through of the business and remixed a design challenge. Here it is:
In creating this remix I learned several things about people. Second Life business owners are very cordial. The norm is to greet visitors immediately and help them find what they are looking for. Same as real life, yes, but imagine the hours that they keep logged on to welcome people who live in different time zones. I'm very familiar with video capture of Second Life, but remixing in Eyespot gave me trouble. My primary issue was synching my audio commentary to my video. There is no audio editing functionality and worse you can't see how long your audio is. Other
eyespotters seem to have made peace with it. I'll give it another try next weekend.
