Game Review: Risk Global Domination
My goal is to play a new game every 3-5 days which means I don't get a lot of time to play each one. So I pretty much get through the tutorials and a little of the gameplay. I have to say the Risk tutorial was great. I was not a fan of the Risk boardgame, as a kid I found it boring. There were so many little pieces to manage and the rules seemed confusing. Also for me setup is a big problem. If the game setup is tedious I probably won't play. Risk overcame this extremely well. All of the tedium was eliminated. For example, you can choose to have the AI randomly select territories and even role the dice for you. As a game in the strategy genre, I really hoped I liked it. I've been looking for a genre that I would realy like. Risk is a simple intro into strategy that is approachable and easy to play. Read the game review. Is there a theory here? I'm always looking for a design best-practice that I can use to build better serious games. Here's a best practice perhaps => Rules that seem confusing or arbitrary on paper should be demonstrated in a game. It would be interesting to study if you learn a set of rules better on a computer versus on paper with drawings. There is got to be a theory that says the brains processing power is wasted trying to convert 2-D information into a 4-D space. You might even postulate that the brain is very good learning rules - reconciling cause and effect - in a physical space because that was key to survival.
