Why is learning so boooooooring

Learning is boring because it isn't real. Educators focus so much attention on facts. It's like taking what should be a suped-up Ferrari of an experience and focusing on the hubcaps. I mean come on educators get a clue. Kids spend hours every day playing video games because games are engaging. Kids constantly have to apply knowledge (facts) to beat the level (problem solving).

Learning doesn't have to be boring. We can make anything interesting, if we put the resources in the right place. The problem is even educational games are boring. It could just be the same boring people who designed learning designed the games. But the Novak book states that in the beginning educational games and non-ed games had the same budgets. It was a dumb publishing scheme that led edugame companies to cut their budgets. That's too bad. If anyone knows of a company putting top-dollar into a game an the level of a really good MMOG or first-person, let me know. I'd like to see the power of combining a good goal with good resources.

I think you're really going to enjoy reading the second book in our course by Clark Aldrich on Simulations and Learning -- he has some Big Thoughts about the future of education & gaming. It's basically the story of how he created an educational game to teach leadership. We'll be playing that game in class. Whether or not you think the game is fun, it is interesting just to evaluate the use of the technology for learning purposes, especially on a vague and amorphous concept like leadership. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts when we get to that section! :)

You said, "The problem is even educational games are boring. It could just be the same boring people who designed learning designed the games." Good quote!! :) One thing that drives me crazy is interactive quiz software that is promoted as an educational "game". No, it's just a quiz that's been put on the computer with some animation and graphics. Woo hoo. Not really a game. (But of course you could argue that this is no different from games like "You don't know Jack" and Trivial Pursuit....) So what makes those games "fun"?

Also check out http://www.socialimpactgames.org for a list of some other "serious" games.
