Assessment

Sample:
103 Students at Canyon Middle School in Castro Valley took the assessment.
of the 103 students, 74 were incoming 6th graders as part of a middle school preperation summer school class
37 students were 7th and 8th graders who were failing a class
the ethnic mix was: 33% asian, 30% white, 17% mexican, 7% black, 13% other

Note: While these numbers might reflect a normal school, I believe these are conservative estimates of the national average. This school already has an awareness of cyber bullying, and their teachers spoke with them prior to watching the video. Most students in my research had much lower scores prior to watching the video.

Method:
First, they took a pre-test. Their tests were collected. Then they watched Adina's Deck as part of an assembly at school. Afterwards, an identical test was administered. In addition to the identical test, follow up questions were asked.

Question: If you are being bullied online or from text messaging, what are some things you can do? (circle all that apply)

% answering yes before watching Adina's Deck % answering yes after watching Adina's Deck % change/gain
tell your school counselor 58.41% 88.11% 29.7% Almost 30% more students identified telling their counselor as a possible solution to being Cyber Bullied after watching the film
tell the police 32.67% 68.3% 35.6% telling the police increased by over 35% after watching the film
print out the texts or ims and show someone 44.55% 56.43% 11.8% this number might have been reflective of the last scene in the film- it was less clear than we anticipated but the point still got accross
peer mediation 17.8% 29.7% 11.9% this technique was used, but we noticed many of the 6th graders were not familiar with this term, which should have been better defined in the film
nothing, it will stop 10.89% 01.9% -8.9% this was a very encouraging change- almost none of the students marked this after seeing the film
tell a parent 86% 81.2% -4.9% this was a perplexing- we did not understand why this number decreased by 4%. It might be due to a margin of error. More discussion on this in the parent/teachers guide,

A sample of Quotes from Students who watched Adina's Deck:

~My favorite scene was the cards becuause it helped their friendship and becoming friends again. I really liked it so don't change it. I really liked when they were finding out who did it because it was very interesting. My favorite character was Adina because even though she was expelled she was very helpful. My least favorite character was Sammy because i don't understand why he had to send the emails and texts. 5th and 6th grade would enjoy this the most because it helped a lot about why not do to those and learn things. I could see teachers showing this in school-yes!! I could see it in class, tv and if it was a little longer, in theaters. I would really enjoy a sequel or episode 2! I think this story was realistic because it will happen in the real world. I would buy a DVD, for the same price as a regular movie- $14.99, but no more than $20. Are we going it watch it in class again? I want to visit the Adina's Deck website. Yes! Yes! Yes!

~the point of the film was do not bully because it could stab you in the back. I liked the counselor- m, 11

~My favorite character was the girl who was trying to help Skye with her problem, I didn't like Sammy because he was BAD. I think incoming 6th graders would enjoy this the most. ~My favorite scene was when the four girls sat down and talked about being cyber bullied. My least favorite scene was the scene where she touched the other girls necklace and how her friends told her to throw it away. Try not to put the suicide scene in please, because it is very emotional for some. I really liked it and think it was important to include the beginning part (expelling). My favorite character was Adina because even though she cyber bullied before, she learned about her mistake. Sammy was my least favorite because he sent mean emails and IMs. I think that middle schoolers would enjoy this the most because middle school is when kids become more insecure about things. Both genders can relate to this because both boys and girls can be mean to eachother. I could see my teachers showing this in school because we could have class discussions about eachother after seeing this.
