Backward Design - Introduction

To begin the discussion for this lesson, consider your experience with this familiar truth:

"....even good students don't always display a deep understanding of what's been taught even though conventional measures (e.g. course grades and test scores) certify success." (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998)

 

How then, can we teachers help our students to develop a deep understanding of what's being taught?


One approach is to begin with a clear understanding of the destination. This is the essence of Backward Design.
