Assessment Outcomes

Science Learning in a Social Environment. Teachers found that the social environment presented opportunities for formative assessment of attitudes and knowledge acquired in inquiry learning. It facilitated learning beyond the constraints of a “50-minute formal lesson”. S3AIL was also a useful platform for student collaboration, allowing for peer learning.

Data Visualization. Students in the pilot study used S3AIL to explore multiple representations of data. They used these to derive possible explanations to the inquiry. S3AIL enabled them to make meaning from the data, more than just the use of tabulated data.

Authentic Science Inquiry. The data collection and visualization tools scaffolded student engagement in the inquiry process. They were asking questions, actively using the data to prove and disprove hypotheses, and engaging in scientific discourse.
