Lab 3/Project 3

Age of Discovery
due Monday, February 12

Explorers and adventurers of the past traveled on missions to discover new territories, landscapes, cultures and inhabitants. When they returned they often needed new ways to communicate what they had seen and experienced before others could understand it. When the worlds are physical, the story can be simple to tell - we use pictures and artifacts. When the worlds are conceptual or informational, there are new challenges. How do we communicate what we discover in information spaces? For this project we explore the art of explanation - making the light bulb go off inside someone's head as they come to understand something new.

Challenge
Design an interactive explanation that enables someone to quickly understand a specific concept, process, or event that exists primarily in a conceptual or informational space. Find a way to understand the thing yourself, then explore and develop a way of explaining it to someone else using an interactive medium.

Goals
The goals for this project are to gain experience in - Identifying mental models and eliciting them from other people Finding and creating appropriate metaphors, conceptual models and organizing principles Designing an interactive experience that engenders understanding Constructing a working interactive on-screen prototype that someone else can use.
