Apple Computer, Inc.
Multimedia Lab

The Multimedia Lab was established in 1987 to realize a vision: to enable people to create powerful "experiences" through available computer technology. Its charter was to explore opportunities for multimedia computing, to demonstrate the findings within Apple Computer, Inc. and to potential Macintosh developers in this arena. The enabling factor for this work was HyperCard, introduced in August 1987. Emphasis in the early years was on education--from 1987 to 1992, this lab of reseearchers included graphic designers, videographers, educational researchers, software technologiest, teachers, and content experts.Development of prototypes involved collaborative ventures and partnerships, and were design-driven. Products resulting from early years include: GTV: A Geographical Perspective on American History produced by Lucasfilm, Ltd. for the National Geographic Society; The Visual Almanac, published by Optical Data, Inc., Interactive NOVA: Animal Pathfinders, Produced by WGBH-NOVA and Media Maker, Published by Macromind.
