Netscape Communicator

The Netscape browser comes with another useful program, Netscape Composer, that users to make Web pages. You and your students can use Composer to make basic Web pages that include text, pictures, and hyperlinks for classroom presentations.

Creat a Web page using Composer

To create a Web page using Composer:

  1. Open Composer.
    (Launch Netscape. Under the 'Communicator' menu, choose 'Composer.')
    The Composer screen looks like this:


  2. Write in the screen.
    (Just type directly in the screen just as you would in a word processor.)
  3. Use the buttons in the top menu to new create new pages, insert links and images, create tables, and so on.
    (When you add things to the Composer window, Composer automatically, behind the scenes, writes the HTML code to display what you're creating as a Web page. Tip: You can copy and paste text you've already written from a word processor directly into Composer.)
  4. Make links
    (To link a word or image to another Web page or Web site, select the word, phrase, or image you want your reader to click on, then choose 'Link' from the 'Insert' menu. You can also click the link button on the top toolbar. Enter the web address (url) for the target Web page (the one you want the link to take your reader to) in the 'Link to' field. Click OK or Apply.)
  5. Test your link

  6. Insert a picture
    (Choose 'Image' from the 'Insert' menu. Use the 'Choose File' button on the dialog box to select the picture you want to use. Choose how you want text to be displayed with your picture.)
  7. Capture a picture from the Web
    (Find the picture or image on the internet that you want to use. Right click on the picture and choose Save Image As. Choose a folder to save the image in.)
  8. Save your work
    (Use the 'Save' option on the 'File' menu to save your work.)
  9. Test your page
    (Click the 'Preview' button on the top menu. This will open a new window and show you how your page will actually look on the Web. You can check that all your links work. If you need to make changes, open your file again in Composer and edit it just as you created it.)
  10. Put your page on the Web
    (As a STEP student you have space allocated to you at http://www.stanford.edu/~yourstanfordid. Putting your page on the Web is a multiple step process that takes at least half an hour and longer if you are unfamiliar with file transfer on a Unix system. Make web pages without using code Netscape Composer allows you to make web pages without using any computer languages. You can type text directly into Composer, or use text that you have typed in another program such as Word, to make web pages very easily.
Present class assignments or notes on the Web Open Netscape and go to the Communicator menu on the top bar. From there, select Composer and a new program will open. You can create new pages with all new content, or you can copy and paste information from other programs.

You can use a template from an existing Website, or other program. Or you can create your own look and feel.

In addition to text, you can put the following images on your website:

  1. Personal photos (see scanning for more information)
  2. Photos or other images from other Websites
  3. ClipArt or other graphics stored on your computer
Complement or replace classroom handouts You can use Composer to put your classroom notes or handouts to the web. Your students will be able to access information from any computer with internet access.
