What is it?

"Instant Messenger" (IM) software facilitates real-time "chat" across the internet. The chat is typically type-written, but now includes live audio (spoken conversation) and the ability to share web links, pictures and files. Originally designed for communicaton between just two people, some IM software now allows for communication among a private group of friends, similar to a "break-out" group in a class discussion.
